THE POWER OF POO

CBC TELEVISION, THE NATURE OF THINGS

2018 | 44 mins

Myth buster for science, Dr. Jennifer Gardy, continues her mission to separate science fiction from science fact. Once again, she uses her own body, and unorthodox tests, to put some very unusual claims under the microscope and discover if they’re myth or science.

Every year, world-wide, we produce 9 billion kilograms of poop - that’s six metric tons per person over a lifetime!

Most of us find poo repulsive. But scientists are beginning to realize there may be more to our stools than meets the eye - and nose.  In Myth or Science: The Power of Poo, Gardy investigates their amazing research and puts their startling discoveries to the test.

  • In Canada she turns a family’s lavatory into a laboratory to discover whether our toilet spreads fecal bacteria when we flush it.

  • She ingests a state-of-the art Pillcam to investigate whether colon cleanses are good for our health because they get rid of kilos of built-up fecal material.

  • She travels to Seattle to discover if poo is an untapped source of potable drinking water by testing a glass produced by a machine that extracts it from human waste.

  • She launches a robot into Boston’s sewers to find out if the fecal material found there can reveal the health of a neighbourhood and head off an outbreak.

  • And she discovers whether dogs can be trained to locate whale poop in the ocean and revolutionize the way whales are tracked and assessed.

In the process Gardy will uncover the latest scientific discoveries about feces, find out if excrement really is our enemy and explain how we may be banishing an extremely valuable resource.  Using the latest tech, unexpected experiments and traditional scientific investigation, she provides a humorous and unique take on the pop-science questions that affect our everyday lives and health.
